It’s the middle of the week. The weekend is still a few days off, the to-do list hasn’t gotten any shorter, and Wednesday can feel like a day you just have to get through. Today’s Daily Bible Verse offers a different way to look at it: this ordinary day is worth noticing, and even worth celebrating.

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Psalm 118:24 (King James Version)

A little context

Psalm 118 is a song of thanksgiving. It opens and closes with the same line, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good,” and in between it tells the story of someone who was hard pressed, called out for help, and came through. It was sung in worship at festival times, so these words were meant to be said together, out loud, by people who had known trouble and were grateful to still be standing. The joy in verse 24 isn’t naive. It comes from someone who has been through something.

Not “a” day, but “this” day

It’s easy to put joy on hold. We’ll relax once the project is done, feel grateful once the bills are paid, enjoy life once things settle down. The psalm points at the day in front of us instead. Not the perfect day we’re waiting for, but this one, with its traffic, its meetings and its unanswered emails. If today was made with care, then it holds something good, even if we have to look a little harder to find it.

Joy as a choice, not a mood

Notice the wording: “we will rejoice.” It reads less like a description of how someone feels and more like a decision. You don’t have to feel cheerful to choose gladness. Sometimes rejoicing looks like a deep breath, a thank-you said out loud, or a few quiet minutes outside. Gratitude is a muscle, and small reps count.

Three small ways to live it today

  • Catch one good moment. A good cup of coffee, a kind text, a patch of sunlight. Pause long enough to actually notice it.
  • Say thank you on purpose. Tell someone specifically what you appreciate about them. It may be the bright spot in their day too.
  • Let “we” be part of it. The psalm says “we will rejoice.” Share a laugh, a meal or a walk with someone. Joy grows when it’s shared.

A closing word

You don’t need a special occasion to be glad. Today, just as it is, is a gift. Look for one good thing in it, hold on to it, and let it carry you through the rest of the week.
