The day is winding down. Maybe it went well, maybe it didn’t, or maybe it was simply long. Tonight’s Daily Bible Verse is a short, steady promise for exactly this hour: whatever today was, tomorrow gets a fresh start.
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23 (King James Version)
A little context
Lamentations is a book of grief. Its five poems mourn the fall of Jerusalem in the sixth century B.C., and Jewish and Christian tradition have long linked them with the prophet Jeremiah. Most of the book is honest about pain. That is what makes these two verses stand out: they sit right in the middle of the sorrow, like a window opening in a dark room. Hope here doesn’t deny the hard things. It shows up alongside them.
Mercy that doesn’t run out
“His compassions fail not” is a striking phrase. People get tired. Our patience thins out by evening, and kindness can feel like something we ration. This verse describes a compassion that doesn’t wear down by the end of the day. If you spent today feeling like you used up your second chances, this is a reminder that grace isn’t kept on a running tally.
Why “every morning” matters
The writer didn’t say mercy shows up once a year or only after we get everything right. He said it is new every morning, as regular as sunrise. That rhythm is a gift. You don’t have to fix the whole week tonight. You only have to rest, wake up, and receive the next day as it comes. Yesterday’s mistakes don’t get the final word over today’s dawn.
Putting it into practice tonight
- Name one thing to let go of. A sharp word, a missed task, a worry you can’t solve before bed. Set it down on purpose.
- Name one thing that was good. Even a small one. Noticing faithfulness in little things trains us to expect it.
- Plan one kind act for tomorrow. Fresh mercy received tends to become fresh mercy shared.
A closing word
If today felt heavy, you’re not starting tomorrow from empty. The sun will come up, and with it a fresh supply of patience, kindness and strength. Rest well tonight. Great is thy faithfulness.
