If you have a digital pre-order for Grand Theft Auto VI, it’s time to start clearing space. Rockstar Games confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that pre-loading for the year’s most anticipated game opens a little earlier than some fans expected, and the download is going to be big: up to 212 GB, depending on your console.
When the pre-load starts
According to Rockstar’s announcement, digital pre-loading on PlayStation 5 begins on Tuesday, November 10, at midnight local time in each player’s own time zone. That means players in different regions will be able to start downloading at different moments, rolling across the globe as the clock strikes 12.
Xbox Series X|S works differently. On Microsoft’s consoles, pre-loading opens globally at the same moment: 12 a.m. GMT on November 10. For players in the U.S. Eastern time zone, that lands on the evening of Monday, November 9. Several outlets, including GamesRadar+, noted that the November 10 window is earlier than the November 12 date some store listings had previously shown for digital pre-loads.
Why 212 GB matters
Rockstar says the pre-load file “will require up to 212 GB depending on your device.” That’s a huge chunk of storage on current-generation hardware, so many players will need to delete older games or move them to external storage before the download can even begin.
The PlayStation Blog’s own guidance is simple: pre-order the digital edition to become eligible for the pre-download, then make sure you have at least 212 GB free. Sony also pointed players toward options for expanding PS5 storage, such as a compatible internal M.2 SSD. Shacknews and others pointed out that the exact space needed on day one can differ from the pre-load size, since installed files and any launch-day updates may change the final footprint. Rockstar has published a pre-load FAQ for players with platform-specific questions.
Physical copies and a $1 poster
Not everyone is going digital. Rockstar says code-in-box versions for both consoles should be available from retailers beginning November 12. Those boxed versions contain a download code rather than the full game on a disc, so buyers will still need to download the game and leave the same kind of storage room.
Alongside the pre-load news, Rockstar is also offering a double-sided poster featuring the cover art and a map. Per reports, it costs about $1 on the Rockstar Store (Digital Trends lists it at $0.99) or comes free with another Rockstar Store purchase, a small extra for collectors counting down the days.
How to get ready
- Confirm your digital pre-order is tied to the account you play on.
- Free up at least 212 GB on your console’s internal storage, or plan an approved storage expansion.
- Keep your console updated and set it to stay connected in rest mode so the download can run overnight.
- Check Rockstar’s pre-load FAQ if your platform or region behaves differently than expected.
What’s next
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-loading lets players download most of the game ahead of time so they can jump in as soon as it unlocks, instead of waiting on a massive download during one of the busiest launch nights gaming has seen in years. With interest this high, servers and home internet connections may get a workout on November 10, so starting early could pay off. We’ll keep following any further updates from Rockstar ahead of launch day.
